The Door at the Crown
Aitareya Upanishad 1.3.12
Meaning · English
He split the crown of the head and entered by that door, called the cleft, a place of joy. Three homes, three dreams: this home, this home, this home.
The Self does not come in through the eyes, the mouth or any opening the senses use. It splits the seam at the very top of the skull and enters there. That opening is given a name, the cleft, and it is called a place of joy. Once inside, the Self has three places to live, which the text also calls three dreams. It points to each in turn and says only "this one," three times, without naming any of them.
Picture someone moving into a house that was built and furnished before they arrived. The workers came and went through the side doors. The owner arrives last, through a skylight in the roof that no one else uses. The body is that house: senses at the side doors, the Self entering alone through the top of the head.
