The Self Seeks Its Entry
Aitareya Upanishad 1.3.11

Meaning · English
He thought: 'How could this go on without me? Which way should I enter? If speech speaks, eyes see, mind thinks, each power working alone, then who am I?'
The body has been built and its powers set in place: speech, breath, sight, hearing, touch, mind, the down-breath, the organ of release. Each now does its own work. The Self sees a problem. If every power runs on its own, the body goes on without it. So it asks two things: how could this last without me, and which way should I come in? The last question, 'then who am I?', shows the Self is none of these powers and has not yet found its place among them.
Picture a marionette lying on a table with every string tied: one to each arm, each leg, the head. Each string can move a limb, yet nothing moves until a hand takes the bar above. The strings are speech, sight, mind and the rest. The hand is the Self, still deciding where to take hold.
