The Down-Breath Succeeds

Aitareya Upanishad 1.3.10

Meaning · English

He tried to seize food with the down-breath, and he took it in. The air within is what seizes food; that same air is what lives on food.

The newly made person has tried every power on the food that fled from him, and each one failed. The one that works is apāna, the down-breath: the breath that moves downward and draws a swallowed mouthful into the body. With it he takes the food in. The text then names this breath vāyu, the air moving inside the body. It is the one power that actually takes hold of food, and it is also the one that lives on food, kept going by what it takes in.

Water standing in a sink stays put however long someone looks at it, talks about it, or stirs it with a finger. Pull the plug, and the downward pull carries it away at once. Food in the story behaves the same way. Seeing, smelling and thinking leave it where it is. Only the body's inward, downward draw takes it in.
