The First Birth

Aitareya Upanishad 2.1.1

पुरुषे ह वा अयमादितो गर्भो भवति यदेतद्रेतः । तदेतत्सर्वेभ्योऽङ्गेभ्यस्तेजः सम्भूतमात्मन्येवऽऽत्मानं बिभर्ति तद्यदा स्त्रियां सिञ्चत्यथैनज्जनयति तदस्य प्रथमं जन्म

Meaning · English

Life begins in a man as seed, strength gathered from all his limbs; he carries himself within himself. Placed in a woman, it is born: the first birth.

The Upanishad traces how a person comes to be, starting before conception. The seed is called the essence or radiance of the whole body, drawn together from every limb. So a man already holds a self inside his own self, a future person he carries without seeing. When that seed passes to a woman, the self is born a first time. Birth, on this account, does not begin at delivery; it begins when the father's own life passes into the mother.

A gardener saves seed from his best tomato plant. That tiny seed carries the whole plant folded inside it: its color, its taste, its height. When he presses it into fresh soil, a new plant starts. The seed is the father's strength gathered small; the soil is the mother; the planting is the first birth.

मनुष्य में जीवन बीज के रूप में आरंभ होता है, जो उसके सब अंगों से संचित बल है; वह अपने भीतर स्वयं को ही धारण करता है। स्त्री में स्थापित होकर वह जन्म लेता है: यह पहला जन्म है।

उपनिषद् बताता है कि मनुष्य कैसे अस्तित्व में आता है, और यह वर्णन गर्भधारण से पहले ही आरंभ हो जाता है। बीज को पूरे शरीर का सार या तेज कहा गया है, जो हर अंग से एकत्र होता है। इस प्रकार पुरुष अपने ही भीतर एक और आत्मा धारण किए रहता है, एक भावी मनुष्य जिसे वह बिना देखे वहन करता है। जब वह बीज स्त्री में जाता है, तब आत्मा पहली बार जन्म लेती है। इस वर्णन के अनुसार जन्म प्रसव से आरंभ नहीं होता; वह तब आरंभ होता है जब पिता का अपना जीवन माता में प्रवेश करता है।

एक माली अपने सबसे अच्छे टमाटर के पौधे से बीज बचाकर रखता है। वह नन्हा बीज पूरे पौधे को अपने भीतर समेटे रहता है: उसका रंग, उसका स्वाद, उसकी ऊँचाई। जब वह उसे ताज़ी मिट्टी में दबाता है, तो एक नया पौधा आरंभ होता है। बीज पिता का बल है जो छोटे रूप में सिमट आया है; मिट्टी माता है; बोना पहला जन्म है।
