Held Like Her Own Body
Aitareya Upanishad 2.1.2
Meaning · English
It becomes one with the woman, like a part of her own body. So it does not harm her. She nurtures this self of his that has entered her.
The seed placed in the mother stops being something foreign. It becomes her own, the way a hand or a foot is her own. Because her body treats it as itself, it does her no harm, though it grows inside her for months. She does not merely carry it. She feeds it and builds it up. What she is growing is the father's own self, now living on in a new place.
A twig grafted onto an apple tree soon stops looking like a stranger. Bark closes over the join, and the tree sends sap into it as it does into any branch of its own. The tree is not hurt. It feeds the newcomer. The mother's body takes in the child the same way, as part of itself, and nourishes it.
