The Father Raises Himself
Aitareya Upanishad 2.1.3
Meaning · English
She who nourishes must be nourished. The woman carries him unborn. Raising the child from birth, the father raises himself, so the worlds go on. This is his second birth.
The mother is now carrying the father's own self inside her. Because she is feeding that life, she in turn has to be fed and looked after. Once the child is born, the father takes up the care. The teacher says this care is not for someone separate: the son is the father's own self in a new body. Raising the child is how families, and so these worlds, keep going. The father's life passing into his son counts as his second birth.
Think of a baker who keeps a sourdough starter. Every day she feeds it flour and water, and the same culture leavens bread for decades. What she feeds is not something new. It is the same living starter, carried forward. In the same way, the father feeding his child is feeding his own life as it continues.
