Handing Over, Then Departing
Aitareya Upanishad 2.1.4
Meaning · English
This self, the son, takes his place for the good works. The other self, work done, years spent, departs. Leaving here, he is born again: his third birth.
The son is spoken of as the father's own self, a second version of him. Once grown, the son is set in the father's place to keep up the good works, the duties and rites a household carries. The father then becomes 'the other self.' He has done what he had to do, and old age has come. He dies. Death is not treated as a stop. Going from this world, he is born again, and that counts as his third birth.
In a relay race, the incoming runner presses the baton into the next runner's hand, then steps off the track, breathing hard. The race goes on in the hand that took the baton. The son is that hand, carrying the family's good works forward. The father has run his lap and leaves the track, and the text says he begins again elsewhere.
