The Hawk Breaks Free

Aitareya Upanishad 2.1.5

Meaning · English

Still in the womb, I knew all the births of the gods. A hundred iron forts guarded me; like a hawk I sped out. Vamadeva said this from the womb.

A seer named Vamadeva is quoted as a witness. His claim is unusual. Before he was born, while still lying in the womb, he already knew how every one of the gods came into being. No one taught him. It was already there. The hundred iron forts are what held him in: walls as hard as metal, layer on layer. They did not stop him. Once he knew, he broke out fast, the way a hawk swiftly flies free.

A chick inside an egg already has its beak, its eyes and its legs. It is not waiting for anyone outside. It taps at the shell, the shell cracks, and it steps out. Vamadeva's knowing was like that: complete before he was born, and strong enough to break the walls around him.
