Becoming Deathless

Aitareya Upanishad 2.1.6

Meaning · English

Knowing this, he rose upward when this body fell away, and in that heaven he reached everything he had wanted, and became deathless. He became deathless.

The man is Vamadeva, the seer quoted just before. He knew how a person is born and born again. Because he knew it, when his body broke apart at death, he went upward into heaven. There every want he had was met. Then he became deathless. His death still happens, and the body still breaks. What changes is where he goes after it. The text says the last part twice, the old way of marking that a teaching has reached its end.

A city bus runs the same loop all day. Most riders stay on, passing the same stops again. One rider knows exactly where his stop is, and when the doors open there, he steps off and does not get back on. The loop is the round of births just described; knowing is what lets Vamadeva leave it.
