What Sees and Hears

Aitareya Upanishad 3.1.1

Meaning · English

Who is this one we worship as the Self? Which is it? The one by which a person sees, hears, smells scents, shapes speech, and tells sweet from not sweet.

The question comes in two steps. First, who is this one we honor as the Self? Then a sharper version: of everything inside a person, which part is it? The answer points away from the eye, ear, nose, tongue and voice, and toward what each of them works by. Seeing, hearing, smelling, speaking and tasting are five different jobs done by five different organs. Yet one knower stands behind all five. That knower, and not any single organ, is the Self being asked about.

Picture a tin lantern punched with five holes. Five spots of light land on the wall, each a different shape, yet there is only one flame inside. Cover a hole and that spot goes dark, but the flame keeps burning. The eyes, ears, nose, tongue and voice are the holes. The Self is the flame behind each.
