Meaning · English
What is called heart and mind: awareness, perceiving, discerning, knowing, retention, insight, steadiness, thought, reflection, drive, memory, resolve, purpose, breath, desire, control. All of these are only names of consciousness.
We usually treat the inner life as a set of separate parts. One part remembers, another decides, another wants, another keeps us going when things get hard. The teacher lists sixteen of these powers, from plain noticing to will, and even includes the breath that keeps a body alive. Then he says they are not sixteen things. Each is one awareness doing a different job. Memory is that awareness turned toward the past. Resolve is it turned toward what comes next. Desire is it reaching for something.
A woman is called Mum at breakfast, Doctor at the clinic, Priya by her old school friends, and the lady next door by the postman. Four names, and the same person answers to each one. Memory, desire, steadiness and the rest are like that: separate names for separate jobs, with one consciousness answering whichever is called.
