The sound that never stops

Vijnana Bhairava 38

Meaning · English

In the unstruck sound, unbroken, heard in the ear's own cup and rushing like a river, one who is steeped in the sound-Brahman reaches the highest Brahman.

Three words carry the verse. Anahata means unstruck: a sound that no one makes by hitting, plucking or speaking. Shabda-brahman is sound as the ground of everything, the word before any word. Nishnata means thoroughly bathed, soaked the way cloth is in dye. Now the clauses. There is a sound that no collision produces. It is unbroken, with no gaps where it starts and stops. It is heard in the ear, the vessel that receives sound, and it moves quickly and steadily like a river. Whoever bathes in that sound-Brahman arrives at the highest Brahman, the reality the sound comes from. The doorway works because the ordinary moment is opened from inside. You are already hearing something every second, and under the noise of the room there is a constant sound that needs nothing from the world. A struck sound ends and leaves a gap, and thought rushes into the gap. A sound with no gap leaves thought nowhere to enter. Attention that stays with it is held by something that has no edge to cling to.

1. Sit with your spine upright and your face soft. Close your eyes if that helps. 2. Listen past the sounds of the room until you find a steady sound that has no beginning and no end. 3. Let it run like a river. Do not shape it, name it or chase it. 4. When a thought pulls you away, notice that you left and return to the sound. 5. Keep listening as if you were soaking in it. 6. Stop when the time you set is over, and let the room's sounds return.

The tradition's account: the mind moves because it jumps from one struck sound or object to the next. An unbroken sound gives it no jump to make. Its movement settles, the support it leaned on falls away, and awareness is left knowing itself. The verse names no breath, so the breath is left alone. For the body, the sitter keeps the spine upright without stiffness, lets the jaw and tongue loosen, and does not strain the ears. What a sitter tends to notice: at first, nothing, only room noise and thoughts about the sound. Then a faint, steady tone appears beneath the quiet. Chasing it or trying to name its pitch makes it slip away, and imagining it produces a false one. Small signs it is working: the sound feels continuous, thoughts sound farther off, and the listening feels wider than the ears. The usual failures are straining, drifting into a story about the sound, and giving up in the first silence.
