Emptiness after the sound
Vijnana Bhairava 39
प्रणवादिसमुच्चारात्प्लुतान्ते शून्यभावानात् । शून्यया परया शक्त्या शून्यतामेति भैरवि
Meaning · English
Sound OM, or a syllable like it, and draw it out long. At the end of the long sound, rest on emptiness. Through the empty, supreme power, one arrives at emptiness, Bhairavi.
Three words carry it. Pranava is the sounding-forth syllable, OM, and the verse says OM and others like it. Pluta means prolonged, literally floated: a sound stretched past its ordinary length until it drifts. Shunya is empty, and bhavana, from the root for becoming, is a bringing-into-being, a dwelling on something until it is present. So shunyabhavana is staying with emptiness until it is there. Now the clauses in order. A syllable is spoken. It is held long. At its end, where the sound has just stopped and nothing has yet replaced it, attention rests on the emptiness. That emptiness is called the supreme power, para shakti, itself empty, and through it one reaches emptiness. Bhairava names the supreme power as the means, not the effort of the one practising. The doorway is an ordinary moment: a sound ending. Every sound ends, and every end is followed by a gap. Bhairava's answer is that the gap, opened from inside, is already what is being sought. Nothing has to be built. The long sound only makes the ending slow enough to be noticed.
1. Sit with your spine upright, your eyes soft, your jaw loose. 2. Breathe in, then sound OM on the out-breath. Draw it out long, as long as is easy, without strain. 3. Follow the sound to its last edge as it thins and stops. 4. When it ends, stay with the emptiness it leaves. Add no picture and no word. 5. When the mind fills the gap or wanders, return to the end of the next sound. 6. Repeat for the length of the sit, then stay quiet a little while before you move.
The tradition's account: a sound gives the mind something to hold. While it lasts, the mind's movement follows it. When the sound ends, the support drops away, and if attention does not reach for another object, the movement stops. What remains is awareness knowing itself, which the text calls emptiness reached through emptiness. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. The body: jaw and throat loosen, the ribs draw in as the air goes out, the belly softens, and the spine stays upright without strain. The breath: one out-breath carries the whole sound, so the end of the sound is also the end of the out-breath, and there is a short pause with no pull to inhale. The mind: it usually grabs at that pause with a picture, a comment, or the thought that emptiness is arriving. The gap is brief at first, a second or two. Small signs it is working: the end of the sound is soft, the ring fades without being pushed, and for a moment there is no next thing. The usual errors are straining the voice, running out of air and gasping, and thinking about emptiness instead of staying in the gap.
