Both edges of a letter
Vijnana Bhairava 40
Meaning · English
Take any letter at all. Let its start and its finish each be fully felt. Through the void at both ends, the person becomes void, and takes the very shape of emptiness.
Three words carry the verse. Varna is a letter, a single syllable-sound, and the verse says any one will do, so nothing special is needed. Shunya is the void, the gap, what is left when nothing stands there. Puman is simply the person, the one who is doing the practice. The clauses go in order. Pick a letter, whichever one. Let its beginning be felt: the moment just before it sounds, when it is not yet there. Let its end be felt: the moment just after, when it has gone. At each edge there is a gap, and the verse names that gap shunya. By dwelling in the gap, the person becomes shunya-bhuta, one who has become void, and then shunya-akara, one whose form is the void. The doorway works because a letter is the most ordinary thing there is, and it is never alone. It always rests between two silences. Ordinarily attention rides the sound and skips both edges. The text asks attention to stay at the edges, so the ordinary moment is opened from inside, with nothing brought in from outside. The one who listens is not left standing apart from the gap, since the verse says the person takes its shape.
1. Sit or stand wherever you are, with your eyes open or closed. 2. Choose any letter, one that comes easily, and say it aloud or in your head. 3. Listen for the moment just before it starts. Then listen for the moment just after it ends. 4. Stay in those two gaps and let the sound itself pass quickly. 5. When the mind wanders, say the letter again and return to its edges. 6. Stop when the gaps stop being clear. A few minutes is enough.
The tradition's account runs like this. A letter holds the mind up like a post. While the sound lasts, the mind has something to grip and keeps moving along it. At the beginning and the end the post is missing, and the mind's movement stops there. With the support gone, awareness is left knowing itself, which the text calls the person becoming the shape of emptiness. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the edges are hard to find. The sound seems to arrive whole, and attention keeps sliding into the middle of it. With repetition the gap before the sound starts to show, a small held quiet, and the gap after is easier to hear. The usual failures are two. Attention may start to chase the sound and forget the edges, or it may turn the gap into a thing to stare at and strain over. A sign it is working is a moment when the thinking has stopped without any effort to stop it, and noticing that ends the moment.
