Strings played long

Meaning · English

In the long notes of strings and other instruments, rest in the notes one after another with a mind that goes nowhere else. At the very end, you take on the body of the highest sky.

Three words carry it. Dirgha means long: the notes are drawn out, so there is room to stay with one. Krama means sequence: the notes follow each other, and you stay with them in order instead of grabbing at the whole. Ananya-cetas means a mind with nothing else in it, attention that does not step away to anything other than the sound. Para-vyoma is the highest sky, an open expanse with nothing in it to hold. Vapus is the body, the form you take on. Now the clauses. Strings and similar instruments give long sounds. You settle into those sounds as they come, one after the next. Your mind does not leave them. When the sound reaches its end, in the pratyanta, the last edge of it, you become the body of that sky. The doorway is that a note is an ordinary event, and it already ends by itself. Bhairava does not ask for anything rare. Attention joined fully to a sound goes with it to where it stops, and the stopping is where the opening is.

1. Sit with a stringed instrument, or a recording of long held notes, close enough to hear clearly. 2. Listen to one note from its start. Stay with it as it lengthens and moves into the next. 3. When the mind goes to something else, return to the note that is sounding now. 4. Follow each note down to its thinnest end instead of waiting for the next one. 5. When the music stops, keep listening to where the sound was. Stay there without adding anything. 6. Stop when the sit has run its length, not when something seems to happen.

The tradition's account: the mind moves because it jumps from one object to the next. Hold it to a single unbroken sound and the jumping stops. At the end of the sound, the thing it was resting on is gone. With no support left, awareness stays as itself, and the text calls this the body of the highest sky. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. The mind slips off in the middle of a long note, to a plan or a memory, and you find yourself gone. Attention also tends to grab the start of each note and ignore the tail. Following the tail is the work. The ears and the face stay soft while the shoulders and jaw loosen on their own, since there is nothing to do but listen. A small sign: you cannot say when the note ended. Common ways it goes wrong: straining after the last trace, waiting for something to happen in the silence, or drifting into dullness and calling it stillness.
