Sound ending in emptiness
Vijnana Bhairava 42
Meaning · English
Take any seed-mantra, a whole body of sound. Go through its coarse letters in their order, then up through half-moon, point and resonance to the very end. Uttered into emptiness, one becomes Shiva.
Three words carry the verse. Pinda means a lump or a body, something gathered into one. A pindamantra is a seed-mantra, a whole mantra packed into a compact sound. Sthula varna are the coarse letters, the syllables your mouth actually makes. Nada is resonance, the hum that stays after the consonant has gone. Shunya is emptiness, and uccara is the act of uttering, a raising up of sound. Now the clauses. Any seed-mantra will do. You pass through its coarse letters one after another, in order, none skipped. The sound then thins into finer stages: the half-moon, the point, the resonance, and finally the end of that resonance. The mantra is uttered into emptiness, and the one who does this becomes Shiva. The doorway is that the sound is ordinary. You speak all day. Here the speaking is followed in its own order, from loud and shaped to faint and shapeless, until it runs out. The text's logic is that the sound itself leads you to the place where it stops. What is there when it stops is called Shiva.
1. Sit upright and comfortable. Pick one short seed-syllable you already know. 2. Say it aloud, letter by letter, in order. Hear each coarse letter as it is made. 3. Let the sound thin as it goes. Let the voice drop, then let only the hum remain. 4. Follow the hum to its last edge, where it stops. Stay in what is there after it, without adding anything. 5. When the mind wanders, come back and say the syllable again from the beginning. 6. Stop when you have done this for the time you set, and sit quietly a moment.
The tradition's account: a mantra is a movement of mind in sound form. As the letters give way to finer stages, that movement thins with them. At the end of the resonance nothing is left for the mind to hold, the support drops away, and awareness stays knowing itself. The text calls that Shiva. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. The lips, tongue and jaw work hard on the coarse letters, then go still. The breath goes out with the sound and the sound needs less of it as it fades. The first difficulty is losing the tail: the mind jumps ahead to the next repetition before the last has ended. The next is counterfeit silence, where you stop the sound early and call it the end. Small signs of it working are that the final stretch gets harder to locate, and that the quiet after the sound feels attended rather than blank. It goes wrong through straining to make emptiness, or through drifting into drowsiness where the sound dissolves because attention did.
