The Open Sound A
Vijnana Bhairava 90
Meaning · English
Repeat the sound a, with no closing dot and no trailing breath. Then, goddess, a great flood of knowing rises all at once, and it is the supreme lord.
Three words carry the verse. Akara is the sound a, the first and plainest vowel, the one the mouth makes when it simply opens. Japa is repeating something quietly, again and again, until the repetition becomes steady. Bindu is the dot that closes a sound into a hum (the m). Visarga is the soft release of breath that trails after a vowel (the h). The verse says to repeat a with neither. So the sound is not shut at the end and not let out as a sigh. It is just the open vowel. Then comes the result, stated as the text's claim: a great flood of knowing rises suddenly, and that flood is the supreme lord, parameshvara. The word sahasa, suddenly, matters. Nothing is built up step by step. The knowing does not arrive as a reward for effort. It rises once the sound is bare. The logic is that an ordinary sound normally ends by closing or by trailing off, and both endings are small moves of the mind. Take away both and nothing is left but the sound itself, open on both sides. The doorway is a vowel you already make a thousand times a day, opened from inside.
1. Sit comfortably with your spine upright and your mouth relaxed. 2. Say a softly, the plain open vowel. Do not close it into a hum and do not let a breath trail after it. 3. Say it again and again, quietly, letting each one end without a finishing touch. 4. When you catch yourself humming or sighing at the end, just say the next one open. 5. When the mind wanders, return to the sound as it is being made. 6. Stop after the time you set, and stay a moment in the quiet after the last one.
In the tradition's own account, a closed or trailing sound still gives the mind something to hold at the edge. A hum closes, a breath-release fades. Without either, the sound has no edge to rest on, the mind's movement stops, the support drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. The text calls that knowing the supreme lord. What a sitter tends to notice is plainer. At first the mouth keeps wanting to close the sound or let it fall off into a sigh, and catching that habit takes several rounds. Attention follows the sound, then drifts to thinking about the sound. Small signs it is working: the sound feels less like something you do and more like something heard, and the gap after it feels wider than the sound. Usual ways it goes wrong: forcing the voice, straining the throat, hunting for an experience, or treating the quiet afterward as a failure because nothing dramatic came.
