Resting on the Final Release
Vijnana Bhairava 91
Meaning · English
Make awareness rest at the end of the soft release of a letter sounded with that release. With a mind that leans on nothing, touch the Brahman that has always been there.
Three words carry the verse. Varna is a letter, a single sounded syllable. Visarga is the release that closes it: the soft breathy ending, a sending-forth, where the sound lets go. Citi is awareness, the plain knowing that is present in every moment. The verse asks you to make that awareness stand on the letter together with its release, and then to follow the release to its very end, the place where the sound has finished and nothing has yet begun. The second half says what happens there. The mind has nothing to hold, because the sound is gone and no new object has replaced it. A mind in that state is called supportless, and with it you touch brahman, which the verse calls sanatana, what is always there. It is not made by the practice, only touched. This works as a doorway because every syllable already ends. You do not have to produce a special state. You take an ordinary event, a sound closing, and attend to its last edge instead of moving on to the next thing. The usual habit is to grab the next object at once. Here the grabbing has nothing to grab.
1. Sit where you will not be disturbed, with the spine upright and the jaw loose. 2. Say one syllable inwardly or in a whisper, and let it close with a soft release of breath. 3. Follow the release all the way to its end. Rest your attention on the last edge of it, where the sound is gone. 4. Do not reach for the next thought or a picture. Let the mind stay without anything to hold. 5. When the mind wanders, notice that it has, and begin again with the syllable and its release. 6. Stop when the attention tires, or when the time you set is over.
The tradition's account is that the mind moves by passing from one support to the next. At the end of the release the support drops away, the movement stops, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is what the text calls touching what is always there. A sitter usually notices something plainer. The first difficulty is that the end of the sound is hard to find, because attention slides into the next thought before the sound has finished. The jaw and throat tend to tighten around the effort of listening, and they can be let go. The body is not the point. Attention is. Small signs it is working are a brief gap that feels clear instead of blank, and the sense of arriving a little before the next thought forms. The usual ways it goes wrong are straining to make the gap last, filling it with a picture, or treating it as a void to be entered. If the gap closes, the sitter simply returns to the letter and its ending.
