The Name Said Unbroken
Vijnana Bhairava 130
Meaning · English
He makes everything resound. He gives all and fills the whole. That is what the word Bhairava says. Say the word without a break, and the one saying it is Shiva.
Three ideas carry the verse. Bhairava is read as a description, not a label. He makes everything sound out: the root behind ravayati has the sense of crying out or calling. He gives everything: sarvada, giver of all. He fills everything: vyapaka, what spreads through and leaves no gap. Each part of the name says something the named one does. Then comes the instruction. The word is said santata, without a break, and that unbroken saying leads to Shiva. The logic is plain. A person is already saying words all day, and the words they repeat shape what they take themselves to be. Here the repeated word means the giver and filler of all things, so the same ordinary habit of speaking is turned toward that. Nothing has to be added to the day. Voice, breath and attention are already busy making sound. The doorway is the moment of saying itself, opened from inside until what the word names is what remains. The verse asks for no belief beforehand, only the saying without a gap.
1. Sit with the spine easy and the jaw loose. Close your eyes or let them rest. 2. Say the word Bhairava silently, or in a low voice if that holds you better. 3. Say it again as the last one ends, so no gap opens between them. 4. Let the word mean what the verse says: the one who makes all sound, gives all and fills all. Do not picture anything. 5. When the mind wanders, notice it and return to the word at once. Do not start over or scold yourself. 6. Stop when the time you set ends. Sit a moment before you move.
The tradition's account: the mind moves because it keeps changing its object. Give it one word with no gap, and the movement has nothing new to catch on. The support the mind usually leans on, the story of I and mine, drops away, and awareness is left knowing itself. That is what the text calls Shiva. What a sitter tends to notice is more ordinary. At first the word breaks. Plans and pictures slip into the gaps, and the word turns into noise said by habit. Sometimes the mind starts illustrating the meaning, and that is still wandering. The jaw, tongue and shoulders often tighten when the saying is pushed, and loosen when it is let be. Small signs it is working: the gaps shorten, the word gets quieter, and listening takes over from producing. Common ways it goes wrong are chasing a feeling, counting repetitions, and saying the word louder to force steadiness.
