Healing Body and Mind

Meaning · English

The first kind, illness of the body, is calmed by medicines that rest on the unseen and on reasoned care. Illness of the mind is calmed by knowledge, understanding, steadiness, memory and a gathered, still mind.

Charaka names two kinds of illness and gives each its own medicine. The body's illness comes from vata, pitta and kapha, the three doshas, or working forces, of the body. It is calmed in two ways. Daiva is the unseen side of care, reaching the unseen. Elsewhere it is tied to the fruit of past deeds, and Charaka lists daiva remedies such as mantra, offerings, vows, gems and auspicious rites. Yukti is reasoned care: food and medicine chosen and timed with thought. The verse names the two side by side. The mind's illness comes from rajas, restless agitation, and tamas, dullness and heaviness. Five things calm it. Jnana is knowing oneself. Vijnana is understanding drawn from sound teaching. Dhairya is steadiness, not being swept away. Smriti is memory, recalling what one has already seen and learned. Samadhi is drawing the mind in from what scatters it. The thought seems to be that a remedy must reach where the trouble lives, and rajas and tamas live in the mind. So the mind is tended by how one thinks and lives, with the same care given to the body.

1. This morning, before you pick up your phone, sit for five minutes. Each time your attention wanders, bring it back to your breath. 2. The next time something upsets you today, take three slow breaths before you answer. 3. At some point today, recall one hard time you came through, and name what helped you then. 4. Tonight, read one page of a teaching you trust. Read it slowly, and stop to think once before you sleep.

Today's medicine agrees that mind and body both need care, though it sees them as more tangled together than a clean split suggests. Talking therapies work on much the same ground Charaka names: understanding oneself, learning steadier responses, and drawing on past coping. Mindfulness and meditation are widely accepted as aids for stress and attention. Rajas and tamas have no direct modern match, though they loosely echo agitation and low mood. Prayer comforts many people, but there is no good evidence that it cures disease. Modern psychiatry also holds that serious depression, anxiety or psychosis often need medication and a doctor's care. The practices here can sit alongside that care, but they do not replace it.
