How the Mind Shows Itself

Charaka Samhita, Sharirasthana 1.18

The sign of the mind is that knowing is absent, and also present. For even when the self, the senses and their objects are in contact, knowing does not happen. When the mind is turned away, there is no knowing; when it is near, knowing goes on. Minuteness and oneness are held to be the mind's two qualities.

Charaka gives the mind a test rather than a description. You cannot see it, but you can tell it is there because knowing sometimes happens and sometimes does not. The eyes may be open, a sound may reach the ears, the self may be present, and still nothing registers. That gap needs a cause, and the cause is the mind. When it turns away from a sense, no knowing arises there. When it comes close, knowing goes on. Chakrapani spells out the reasoning: many things touch the senses at once, yet we know some and miss others. If the mind were vast, or if there were several minds, we would take in sight, sound, smell, taste and touch all together. We do not. So the text calls the mind anu, minute, and eka, one. On his reading it is a single small thing that moves from sense to sense. This makes attention the doorway to every experience in a life. The Yoga Sutras and the Gita also care about where the mind is turned.

Picture a dark storeroom crowded with things: a bicycle, jars, a clock on the shelf. All of it is there the whole time. Yet with one small torch you see only what the beam rests on. To see the clock, you must swing the beam off the jars. The room is the world touching the senses. The single narrow beam is the mind.

Modern psychology has a close cousin of this idea in attention. The senses receive far more than we ever notice, and the brain lets only a little of it into awareness. Most people know what it is to read a page without taking in a word, or to miss their name being called while absorbed. What feels like doing two things at once is often quick switching between them, at some cost in accuracy. The old account parts ways in its picture of the mind as one tiny thing. Today attention is understood as the work of many brain networks. A great deal is also handled in parallel below awareness, such as walking and balance. A minute, single mind-substance has no modern match. The observation behind it holds up well.
