Where Suffering Begins

Meaning · English
Lapses of understanding, of steadiness and of memory; the arrival of time and of past deeds; and the contact of the senses with what does not suit them: know these as the causes of suffering.
Charaka names the roots of suffering in one breath. Three are failures inside a person. Dhi is understanding, the power to tell what helps from what harms. Dhriti is steadiness, the grip that holds the mind back from what it already knows will hurt. Smriti is memory, keeping hold of what experience has taught. When any of these slips, a person can walk into pain with open eyes. Two causes come with time. Kala is the arrival of a season, a stage of life or an hour of the day. Karma is past deeds coming to their fruit. The last cause is the senses meeting what does not suit them. Chakrapani reads the first three as faces of one understanding. He says the illnesses of time are the ones time brings into view, not always the ones it makes. He traces ripening deeds back to lapses of understanding too. The verse asks only that these be known, since care begins with knowing.
Picture a driver on a winter road. He has to read the road well, keep his hands steady on the wheel, and remember the bend where he skidded last year. Still, frost comes with the season, the worn tyres are his own old neglect, and an oncoming glare can blind him. His own skill, the timing of things, and what meets his eyes: the whole list sits in that one drive.
Much of this sits comfortably with what a family doctor sees. Poor judgement, weak self-control and forgetting what went wrong last time are the ordinary paths into smoking, overeating, missed sleep and missed medicines. Psychology studies these as decision-making, impulse control and learning from experience. Time is also well understood as a factor in health. Many conditions appear with age. Some follow the seasons, and the body keeps a daily rhythm that affects sleep and digestion. Harsh sensory input is a known strain: loud noise can damage hearing, glare tires the eyes, and late screens disturb sleep. Karma, in the sense of past deeds ripening across a life or lives, has no modern match. The nearest honest parallel is that past habits leave lasting marks on the body.
