The Fault of Wisdom

Charaka Samhita, Sharirasthana 1.102

Meaning · English

When understanding, steadiness and memory have slipped, and a person does what is unwholesome, know that act as the fault of wisdom, the thing that stirs up every dosha.

Three faculties keep a person on a good path. Dhi is understanding, which sees what helps and what harms. Dhriti is steadiness, the restraint that holds the mind back from what it knows will hurt. Smriti is memory, holding on to what one has learned and lived through. When these slip and an unwholesome act follows, Charaka gives that act a name: prajnaparadha, the offence against one's own wisdom. The fault is not simple ignorance. It is knowing better and acting anyway. The Gita traces a similar slide, from confusion to lost memory to ruined understanding. Charaka says such an act provokes all the doshas. In this system's terms, the doshas are the forces that bring disorder when disturbed: vata, pitta and kapha in the body, and rajas (restlessness) and tamas (dullness) in the mind. So the act is not small. It reaches body and mind together. The teaching asks a person to guard all three faculties, because health starts in the choosing.

1. Before your first meal today, pause for one breath and ask whether this food suits you right now. Let that answer, not habit, choose. 2. Pick one thing you already know does you harm, such as a late screen or a sharp reply. When the pull comes today, hold back from it once. 3. Tonight, spend two minutes recalling one moment when you acted against what you knew. Notice what came just before it, without scolding yourself.

Psychology knows this gap well. People often know what is good for them and still do otherwise. Tiredness, stress, strong cravings and old habits all weaken self-control in the moment. A family doctor would agree that much long-term ill health is tied to daily choices: smoking, heavy drinking, poor sleep, too little movement, careless eating. To that extent Charaka's point holds. Repeated unwise acts do wear on body and mind. The idea that one act stirs every dosha has no modern match. Medicine does not divide illness into these forces. Illness also comes from genes, infection, injury and plain chance. Someone who is ill should not read this teaching as proof that the illness is their own fault.
