Two Endings of Pain

Charaka Samhita, Sharirasthana 1.137

Meaning · English

In yoga and in liberation, all feelings cease to arise. In liberation the ending is complete; yoga is what sets liberation going.

Vedana is felt experience. That means pain, and also pleasure, since the next verse names the two together. Charaka names two states where all of it stops arising. The first is yoga: the mind gathered and steady in the self. The second is moksha, liberation, the final release from having a body and being born again. The difference lies in the word complete. Chakrapani reads it as 'does not come again' and draws out what follows from that. The stillness of yoga is real, but it can lapse, and feelings return when the mind moves again. Liberation does not lapse. Then comes the link between them: yoga is what sets liberation in motion. One is the practice, and the other is where the practice ends. The text gives no reason here. It is answering a question already asked, about where all these feelings end. It places the end of feeling in a mind held steady in the self (yoga), which leads on to final release (moksha), a thread the Gita and the Yoga Sutras share.

A gas stove turned off at the knob goes silent, but the supply line is still live, and one turn lights it again. Closing the main valve leaves nothing to light. Yoga is the knob: feeling stops for as long as the mind is held still. Liberation is the valve closed for good. And the hand learns the knob before it ever reaches the valve.

Today's medicine agrees with part of this. Pain is not only a signal from the body. Attention, mood and expectation shape how strongly it is felt. Meditation and mindfulness training are used in pain clinics because they can ease the distress around pain, even when the sensation itself stays. The complete stopping of all feeling has no clinical measure, and medicine does not claim it. Liberation from rebirth is a spiritual teaching, outside what medicine can test, and it should be read as one. One plain caution applies. Pain often carries a message. New, severe or lasting pain needs a doctor, and meditation is not a replacement for that care. Intensive meditation can also unsettle some people, especially those carrying past trauma, so it is best approached with a steady teacher.
