Meaning · English
Pleasure and pain arise from the coming together of the self, the senses, the mind and their objects. When the mind does not set out toward them, and rests steady in the self, both pleasure and pain cease, and mastery arises, even while one has a body. The sages who know yoga call this yoga.
Pleasure and pain arise when four things meet: the self (atman), the senses (indriya), the mind (manas) and the objects of the senses (artha). Without that meeting there is nothing to feel. So the way out is anarambha, literally 'not starting': the mind does not set out to take hold of objects. Chakrapani reads it that way. Then the mind rests in the self and is sthira, steady. He glosses this as unmoving, held in knowing the self. With that, both pleasure and pain fall away. Something is also gained: vashitva, mastery, which the text goes on to list as eight powers. Sasharira, 'with the body', marks this as possible in a living person. The sages name this state yoga. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras define yoga in a close way, as the stilling of the mind's movements. For a life, the teaching moves the work from changing what the world sends to whether the mind runs out to meet it.
1. Three times today, when something pulls at you, a message or a craving or an irritation, pause for three breaths before you reach for it. 2. Sit for five minutes this evening in a quiet place. Each time the mind sets off after a thought or sound, note 'going out' and let it come back. 3. At one meal, eat the first five bites with no screen or talk, attending only to the food. 4. Before sleep, recall one moment when you did not chase a reaction, and how it passed.
Today's psychology would recognise much of this. How much a sensation bothers us depends a great deal on attention and on what the mind adds to it, and pain clinics and therapists teach attention practices for that reason. Regular meditation is widely accepted as helping some people with stress and reactivity. The verse goes further, to the complete ending of pleasure and pain and to special powers; there is no modern evidence for those, and they belong to spiritual teaching rather than medicine. Mind and self as separate entities have no match in physiology. Pain is also a signal: stillness is not a substitute for having pain, illness or low mood looked at, and long intensive sitting can unsettle some people, especially after trauma.
