Serving the good rightly, and keeping well away from those who are not; keeping vows and fasting, and restraints of many kinds; holding to the teachings on right conduct; understanding; delight in solitude; no delight in the objects of the senses; resolve toward freedom; the highest steadiness; not beginning new deeds, and wearing away those already done; the wish to go out; freedom from the sense of 'I'; seeing danger in being joined; mind and intellect gathered; the truth of things examined. All of this comes forth from the presence of remembering what is true.
Atreya lists the habits of a life moving toward moksha, freedom from rebirth, then shows how they connect. It starts with company: serving good people well and keeping clear of those who are not. Then discipline: vows, fasting, restraints of many kinds. Then study: holding to the teachings on right living, and understanding (vijnana). Then a turn inward: a liking for quiet places, the senses' pleasures losing their pull, a firm resolve toward freedom, and dhriti, steadiness. Chakrapani reads its highest form as a strong reining in of the mind. New binding deeds are not begun, while past ones wear out as their fruits are lived through. There is the wish to leave the cycle, and no sense of 'I do this, this is mine'. There is the danger seen in the self being tied to the body. Mind and intellect are gathered in the self and the truth of things is tested. The first practices, from good company to steadiness, build tattva-smriti, remembering what is really so, and from that remembering the rest follows. For the commentator, that means remembering the self is not the body.
1. Today, spend ten minutes with the words or company of someone whose conduct you respect. Let one conversation that usually leaves you worse go by. 2. Choose one small restraint, such as no phone at meals, and keep it until bedtime. 3. Sit for ten minutes somewhere quiet, with no screen and no sound playing. 4. When you catch the thought 'I did this' or 'this is mine', name one other person or thing that made it possible. 5. Before sleep, spend two minutes going over the day plainly: what happened, not what you wished had happened.
Parts of this list sit comfortably with what a family doctor knows today. The people we spend time with shape our habits and moods. Small, regular restraints and routines make self-control easier. Quiet time and calm, honest attention to one's own thoughts tend to steady a busy mind and ease rumination. Less attachment to possessions and status tends to go with less worry. Moksha, rebirth and the wearing out of past deeds belong to philosophy and faith. Medicine has no measure for them. Fasting is not safe for everyone: people who are pregnant, ill, elderly, very young, diabetic or have a history of eating difficulties should not fast without a doctor. Withdrawal from people and from pleasure can be a sign of low mood rather than wisdom, and is worth checking.
