'This person is of one measure with the world,' said the revered Punarvasu Atreya. 'As many distinct things with form as there are in the world, so many are there in the person; as many as are in the person, so many in the world.' As the revered Atreya spoke this way, Agnivesha said: 'From a statement this short we cannot reach its meaning. We wish to hear it explained more fully by you, from your understanding.'
Atreya, also called Punarvasu, makes a short, large claim: the person, purusha, is lokasammita, of the same measure as the world. Every distinct kind of thing that has form out in the world has a counterpart inside a human being, and the count runs both ways. The text gives its reason in the very next passage: the world and the person are built from the same six elements. These are earth, water, fire, air, space, and brahman, the unmanifest (the conscious ground). A body is not a stranger set down in nature. It is nature, gathered into one shape. Agnivesha does not simply nod along. He says so few words do not let him reach the meaning, and he asks his teacher to unfold it from his own understanding. That honest asking is what draws out the fuller teaching that follows.
Scoop a cup of seawater and taste it. The salt, the water and the sun's warmth in it are the same as in the whole ocean. The cup is small, but nothing in it is foreign to the sea. That is the person Atreya describes: a small vessel holding the same stuff the world is made of, kind for kind.
Part of this reads well today. The body is built from the same matter as its surroundings. The atoms in bone, blood and breath came from food, water and air, and they return there. The body also answers to the world around it. Daylight sets the sleep clock, heat and cold change circulation and appetite, and the seasons shift mood for many people. The six elements are a different kind of idea, though. Earth, water, fire, air and space are classes of quality, not the chemical elements of the periodic table, and they should not be read as chemistry. The claim of an exact count, one thing inside for every thing outside, has no modern counterpart. Nor does medicine treat consciousness as a building block of the body. That question belongs to philosophy, not physiology.
