Meaning · English

One who speaks the truth and is free of anger, who has turned away from alcohol and sex. Who harms no one, does not overstrain, is calm and speaks kindly. Who is devoted to prayer and cleanliness, steady, always giving and given to austerity. Who is glad to honour gods, cows, brahmins, teachers, gurus and elders. Who is ever kind and always moved by compassion, keeps sleep and waking even, and takes milk and ghee daily. Who knows place, time and measure, is skilled in right use and free of ego. Whose conduct is praised and unmixed with wrongdoing, whose senses turn toward the inner self. Who keeps company with elders, believers and the self-mastered, and is devoted to the teachings of dharma. Know that person as always in rasayana. Whoever has these qualities and takes rasayana gains all its benefits as described.

Rasayana is Ayurveda's branch of renewal. It is care meant to keep body and mind fresh, resilient and long-lived. Usually Charaka means preparations and regimens. Here he names a rasayana made only of how a person lives. It includes truth, freedom from anger, turning away from alcohol and sex, not harming, not overstraining, giving, reverence for elders and teachers, compassion, even sleep, daily milk and ghee, a sense of place, time and measure, and freedom from ego. A person who lives like this, he says, is always taking rasayana. His last line adds a second claim: a person with these qualities who also takes rasayana medicines gains all their benefits as described. In other chapters, not in this reading, Charaka names rajas, the mind's restlessness, and tamas, its dullness, as the mind's own doshas, or disturbing forces. Ayurveda elsewhere also links a calm mind with good digestion and vitality. Chakrapani reads the list as rejuvenation in its own right. To our eye, much of it echoes the Yoga Sutras' restraints and the Gita's steady person.

1. Before you answer anyone today, check that what you are about to say is true, then say it kindly. 2. When irritation rises, breathe out slowly and wait ten seconds before you speak. 3. Phone or visit an older relative or a former teacher, and listen to them for ten minutes without steering the talk. 4. Give one thing away freely today: an hour of help, a shared meal, or your full attention. 5. Go to bed tonight at a regular hour, and get up at your usual time.

Much of this list sits comfortably with what doctors know today. Long-running anger and hostility are linked with higher blood pressure and strain on the heart, and handling anger more calmly is good for health. Regular times for sleeping and waking support mood, memory and appetite. Close ties with others, kindness and giving are linked with better wellbeing, and in later life with living longer. Cutting down on alcohol is plain medical advice. Other parts do not match. There is no evidence that an ordinary, healthy sexual life ages a person. Milk and ghee every day do not suit everyone, because some people cannot digest milk and ghee is rich in saturated fat. Rasayana as a single idea of renewal has no exact modern match. Still, the link between a settled mind and a healthier body is well accepted.
