Happiness Rests on Dharma

Ashtanga Hridayam, Sutrasthana 2.20

Meaning · English

All the activities of all beings are held to be for the sake of happiness. And there is no happiness without dharma; therefore one should be devoted to dharma.

Vagbhata starts from something few would dispute. Every being, not people alone, does all it does for the sake of sukha: ease, happiness, life going well. His word for activities, pravritti, takes in everything, from eating and working to resting and reaching out to others. Then comes the second step. There is no sukha without dharma, the right conduct that holds a life and the people around it together. So, he concludes, be dharma-para: someone for whom right conduct comes first. The reasoning is practical rather than pious. Everyone is after happiness anyway, and conduct is its ground, so good conduct is simply the sensible road to it. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that a troubled mind is itself a source of illness. The Charaka Samhita (Chikitsasthana 1.4) counts truthfulness, freedom from anger and gentleness as a rasayana, a rejuvenation. What it asks of a life is less a rule than an order of priority.

1. Before your first meal, name one thing you will do today because you want it to go well, and ask whether it costs anyone else. 2. At midday, notice one moment when you would bend the truth for comfort, and say the plain version kindly instead. 3. When irritation rises today, wait three slow breaths before you answer. 4. Tonight, take two minutes to recall one act that left you at ease and one that did not. Notice what separated them.

Psychology today would accept Vagbhata's starting point in a looser form. Much of what people do aims at feeling well or avoiding distress, though people also act from habit, duty or fear. His second claim fits well-established understanding better than one might expect. Close, trusting relationships are among the steadiest supports of lasting wellbeing, and honesty, kindness and generosity tend to build them. Long-held resentment and guilt are known to keep the body's stress response running and to unsettle sleep. Modern thought parts company with the strong form of the claim. There is no evidence that happiness is impossible without virtue, and short-lived pleasure plainly can come from wrongdoing. Dharma itself has no modern match. It joins ethics, duty and a sense of right order into one idea that medicine does not measure.
