Good Friends, Ten Wrongs

Meaning · English

With devotion, keep the company of good friends, and stay far from the other kind. Violence, theft, desire gone astray; tale-bearing, harsh words and lies; idle chatter, ill will, coveting, and a view turned upside down. These are wrong action in ten forms. Give them up, in body, speech and mind.

Vagbhata asks two things. First, seek out kalyana-mitras, friends who want your good and lead you toward it. Serve them with real regard, and keep a distance from people who pull the other way. Second, put down ten wrongs. They fall into the three groups the verse names at its close. The body's three are harming living things, taking what is not given, and desire gone astray, usually read as misconduct in sexual life. Speech has four: paishunya, carrying tales that set people against each other; harsh words; lies; and idle, rambling talk. The mind's three are vyapada, wishing others harm; abhidhya, eyeing what belongs to someone else; and a view turned upside down that takes wrong for right. The text has just said that happiness needs right living. This list shows what right living looks like day to day. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that the mind has its own doshas, or faults: rajas, restless agitation, and tamas, dull heaviness. One way to read this list is that acts like these feed both. The same ten appear in Buddhist teaching, and the first ones echo the restraints of the Yoga Sutras. The list ends with the mind.

1. Today, think of one friend who brings out the best in you. Call or message them for ten minutes, just to stay in touch. 2. In one conversation today, notice any talk about someone who is not there. Let it drop, or add one fair word about them. 3. When something sharp is about to leave your mouth, take one breath first. Then say the same thing plainly and kindly. 4. Tonight, spend two minutes recalling one moment of envy or ill will from the day. Name it to yourself, then set it down.

Much of this sits comfortably with what a family doctor would say today. Close, supportive relationships are among the steadiest things linked to good health and a longer life. Habits and moods also spread through the people we spend time with, so choosing company carefully has a real basis. Long-standing hostility and anger are counted among the risk factors for heart disease. Brooding envy and resentment go along with anxiety and low mood. Talking therapies work on patterns of thought, much as the verse places the root of wrong action in the mind. Lying and gossip erode the trust that relationships depend on. Where the match ends: sin is a moral idea, not a medical one. There is no evidence that particular wrongs cause particular illnesses. Rajas and tamas have no exact modern equivalent.
