Meaning · English

Those who suffer from lack of livelihood, from illness or from grief: stand by them as far as you are able. Always see as yourself even the insect and the ant.

Vagbhata names three kinds of trouble. Avritti is having no livelihood, no means to live. Vyadhi is illness. Shoka is grief. Toward people caught in any of these, he asks a person to anuvarteta: to stand by them, keep them company, help them along. He adds shaktitah, as far as one is able. The help he asks for fits what one actually has. The second line widens the circle to the smallest lives. Even an insect or an ant is to be seen as oneself, its life felt the way one feels one's own. The verse gives no reason. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that conduct is itself medicine. Charaka counts such conduct, kindness and freedom from harm among it, as achara rasayana, the rejuvenation of right conduct. The Gita describes the same seeing, all beings measured by oneself, and the Yoga Sutras' ahimsa, non-harming, follows from the same seeing. In a life, it asks for real help within reach, and a settled sense that every life matters to the one living it.

1. Today, think of one person you know who is out of work, unwell or grieving. Call or message them for five minutes and ask how they are. 2. Offer one thing you can truly do, such as an errand, a shared meal or an hour of listening, and keep it small enough to finish. 3. When an ant or insect crosses your path today, pause before swatting. Step around it, or, if it is harmless to handle, carry it outside on a sheet of paper; leave stinging or biting ones such as wasps, bees, fire ants and scorpions alone. 4. Before sleep, recall one moment when you felt someone else's trouble as your own.

Today's psychology agrees with much of this. People facing job loss, illness or bereavement generally cope better when others stay close, and loneliness is widely recognised as bad for both mental and physical health. Helping others is also linked with a greater sense of meaning and wellbeing in the helper. The clause about helping as far as one is able fits what doctors know about carers: those who give beyond their limits wear themselves out, so helping within one's means protects both people. Seeing others as oneself resembles what psychologists call empathy and perspective-taking, which can grow with practice. Sparing insects has no medical evidence behind it as a health measure. It is an ethical stance. Protection from mosquitoes, ticks and household pests that spread disease still matters.
