Kindness Even to an Enemy
Ashtanga Hridayam, Sutrasthana 2.25
Meaning · English
Let doing good come first, even toward an enemy bent on doing harm. Keep one mind in good fortune and in misfortune. Envy the cause, but not the fruit.
Vagbhata packs three disciplines of the mind into one line. First, upakara, doing good, is to come first, even toward an enemy whose aim is apakara, doing harm. The word is 'chiefly': kindness sets the tone, instead of the harm deciding the reply. Second, ekamana, being of one mind, the same in sampad, good fortune, and vipad, misfortune. Success does not inflate the person, and loss does not flatten them. The Gita praises the same evenness in pleasure and pain. Third, a careful permission about irshya, envy. It may be aimed at the cause, not at the fruit. When another has what one lacks, the wanting turns toward the work, learning or goodness that earned it. Envying the result alone only sours. The verse gives no reason of its own. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that the mind has two disturbing qualities, rajas, restless agitation, and tamas, dullness; in the general Ayurvedic view, anger and envy feed them. Conduct like this is counted as Achara Rasayana, rejuvenation through how one lives.
1. Think of one person who has wronged you. Today, do one small decent thing about them: a courteous reply, or declining to repeat a story against them. If they are unsafe, keep your distance and do it from there. 2. When any news reaches you today, good or bad, take three slow breaths before you speak about it. 3. The next time you feel a pang of envy, write one line naming what that person did to get there. Underline one part of that effort you could begin yourself this week.
Much of this sits well with today's psychology. Holding a grudge keeps the body's stress response running, and long resentment is commonly seen alongside poor sleep and tension. Letting go of it, which is not the same as excusing the harm, tends to ease that load. Staying steady through good and bad news is close to what psychologists call emotional regulation, a skill that improves with practice. Psychologists also distinguish envy that resents another's success from envy that spurs a person to copy the effort behind it, and treat the second as the useful kind, much as Vagbhata does. The mind's qualities rajas and tamas have no direct modern match. One caution: being kind to someone harmful never requires staying near them; safety comes first.
