How to Speak Well

Ashtanga Hridayam, Sutrasthana 2.26

Meaning · English

At the right time, speak what is helpful, measured, not misleading and pleasing. Be the first to greet, with a kind face, of good character, softened by compassion.

Vagbhata gives a short checklist for speech. Kale: at the right time, when the words can be heard and used. Hitam: helpful, aimed at the listener's good. Mitam: measured, enough and no more. Avisamvadi: not misleading, so that what you say matches the facts and matches what you said before. Peshalam: pleasing, gentle to the ear. Then he turns from the words to the speaker. Purvabhibhashi: one who speaks first, who greets before being greeted. Sumukha: a kind, open face. Sushila: of good character. Karuna-mridu: made soft by compassion. The verse gives no reason of its own. As wider Ayurvedic context, not part of this verse: Ayurveda teaches elsewhere that the mind has its own disturbing forces, rajas (restlessness, agitation) and tamas (dullness), and that good conduct is itself a rasayana, a renewing medicine for body and mind. The Gita's discipline of speech asks for the same: true, pleasant and beneficial words. Lived out, this means weighing timing and kindness alongside truth, and letting warmth begin with you.

1. Today, greet the first person you meet, at home, at a shop or at work, before they greet you, using their name if you know it. 2. Before one reply in a meeting or a message, pause for a breath and cut it down to what is needed. 3. If you must give a correction or hard news, wait for a moment when the person is not rushed or hungry, then say it plainly and gently. 4. Tonight, recall one thing you said today that bent the truth a little, and plan how to set it right.

Much of this sits comfortably with what psychology and everyday medicine understand about communication. A warm greeting and a relaxed face change how the same words are received. People who are tired, hungry or upset take in less, so timing matters. Short, clear messages are easier to understand and remember. Honesty builds trust, and small deceptions tend to wear relationships down. Good social connection is widely recognised as part of health, linked with mood, stress and how people cope with illness. What has no modern match is the idea of rajas and tamas as doshas of the mind, or of conduct renewing the tissues in a literal sense, though calmer relationships do ease stress. Pleasant speech should never mean hiding a symptom from a doctor or keeping quiet about harm.
