Do not torment the senses, nor indulge them too far. Begin no undertaking that is empty of the three aims of life, and follow those aims without setting one against another. At every step, in all matters of conduct, keep to the middle.
The senses are sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch, the doors through which the world reaches us. Vagbhata asks for two refusals. The first is not to torment them: no straining the eyes, starving the tongue or punishing the body in the name of discipline. The second is not to spoil them by feeding every craving the moment it calls. Then he turns to action. The trivarga, the three aims of a householder's life, are dharma, right conduct; artha, livelihood and wealth; and kama, honest enjoyment. Nothing should be begun that serves none of these. They are to be pursued so that one does not crush the others, so that earning does not ruin goodness and pleasure does not ruin earning. Last comes the rule that holds the rest together: at every step, in every kind of conduct, take the middle course. The verse gives no reason of its own. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that too little, too much or wrong use of the senses is one of the roots of illness, in body and in mind. The Gita says much the same of eating and sleep.
1. At one meal today, stop when you are pleasantly satisfied, a little before full, and notice how you feel an hour later. 2. This evening, set screens aside for twenty minutes and let your eyes and ears rest on something gentle, such as a window, a walk or quiet talk. 3. Before you begin one task today, ask whether it serves right conduct, your livelihood or honest enjoyment. If it serves none, drop it. 4. When work and home pull against each other today, find one small arrangement that gives each its share.
Much of this sits easily with what a family doctor would say. Loud noise over time damages hearing, and long hours at bright screens tire the eyes and disturb sleep. Living with too little stimulation is also known to be distressing. Moderation in eating, drinking, sleep and exercise is ordinary mainstream advice, and extremes in either direction carry known risks. Psychology recognises that a life given wholly to work, or wholly to pleasure, tends toward burnout or emptiness, and that people do better when their days hold meaning, a livelihood and enjoyment together. The three aims are a moral framework, though, and nothing medicine measures. The middle way is a rule for healthy daily life. Someone who is ill, pregnant, old or very young may need more rest or a specific diet, and that need comes first.
