Sita's Gift to Hanuman

Hanuman Chalisa 33

Meaning · English

You are the giver of the eight powers and the nine treasures; Mother Janaki gave you this boon.

Hanuman is called a giver of two kinds of riches. The eight powers are the abilities old lists credit to a perfected yogi, such as growing as small as an atom or as large as a mountain. The nine treasures are wealth of every kind. Then comes the source: Janaki, which means Sita, daughter of King Janaka, gave him this boon. In the Ramcharitmanas, when Hanuman finds her in the Ashoka grove and gives her Rama's ring, she blesses him to be ageless, deathless and full of good qualities.

A grandmother hands her grandson the house keys before a long trip. From then on, the neighbours come to him for whatever they need from the storeroom. He opens the doors freely, but the keys are hers. Hanuman stands the same way: the powers and treasures pass through his hands because Sita placed them there.
