Keeper of Rama's Elixir

Hanuman Chalisa 34

राम रसायन तुम्हरे पासा। सदा रहो रघुपति के दासा॥

Meaning · English

You hold the elixir of Rama; forever you remain the servant of the lord of the Raghus.

Tulsidas says Hanuman holds Rama's elixir. The word is an old healer's term for a tonic that restores strength and keeps life going. What Hanuman carries is Rama himself: love for Rama, and the nearness to him that devotees long for. The second half says why he has it. He stays, always, the servant of Raghupati, Rama of King Raghu's line. The two halves belong together. Hanuman keeps the elixir because he never stops serving.

Picture the one house on a street where the good medicine is kept: the jar of balm a grandmother makes every winter. Neighbours do not go to a shop for it. They knock at her door. That is Hanuman's place. Whoever wants nearness to Rama comes to the one who already holds it.

तुम्हारे पास राम का रसायन है; तुम सदा रघुपति के सेवक बने रहते हो।

तुलसीदास कहते हैं कि हनुमान के पास राम का रसायन है। यह पुराने वैद्यों का शब्द है, उस औषधि के लिए जो बल लौटाती है और जीवन को चलाए रखती है। हनुमान जो धारण करते हैं, वह स्वयं राम हैं: राम के प्रति प्रेम, और उनकी वह निकटता जिसके लिए भक्त तरसते हैं। दूसरा भाग बताता है कि यह उनके पास क्यों है। वे सदा रघुपति के, यानी राजा रघु के वंश के राम के, सेवक बने रहते हैं। दोनों भाग एक-दूसरे से जुड़े हैं। हनुमान के पास रसायन इसलिए है क्योंकि वे सेवा करना कभी नहीं छोड़ते।

किसी गली के उस एक घर की कल्पना कीजिए जहाँ अच्छी दवा रखी रहती है: लेप की वह शीशी जो एक दादी हर जाड़े में बनाती है। पड़ोसी उसके लिए किसी दुकान पर नहीं जाते। वे उसी का दरवाज़ा खटखटाते हैं। यही हनुमान का स्थान है। जो भी राम की निकटता चाहता है, वह उसी के पास आता है जिसके पास वह पहले से है।
