Many Lifetimes' Sorrow Forgotten
Hanuman Chalisa 35
Meaning · English
By singing of you, one reaches Rama, and the sorrows of birth after birth are forgotten.
Bhajan is singing in devotion, and here it means singing of Hanuman. Pavai means reaches or finds. So whoever sings of Hanuman arrives at Rama. Hanuman is the one who leads to his lord. The second half names what follows. Bisravai means forgets, lets slip from the mind. The sorrows are those of janam janam, birth after birth, a weight carried across many lives. The line does not say those sorrows are erased. It says they stop holding the mind.
A child lost at a crowded fair is found by an older cousin, who takes her hand and walks her back to her mother. Once she is in her mother's arms, she stops crying about the long, frightening hour. Singing of Hanuman is that hand, and Rama is the mother. The lost hour still happened, but it no longer fills her.
