Raghubar's City at the End

Hanuman Chalisa 36

Meaning · English

At life's end they go to the city of Raghubar, and wherever they are born again, they are called Hari's devotee.

Ant kal is the hour of death. Raghubar, best of the line of Raghu, is Rama, and pur is his city. So the one who sings Hanuman's praise, carried over from the line before, goes at the end to Rama's own city. The second half covers the other case. Jahan janm: wherever a birth does come, that person kahai, is called, a hari-bhakt, a devotee of Hari, a name of the Lord that points here to Rama. Either way, the tie to Rama holds.

A mother stitches her child's name inside a school sweater. Most days it comes home on the child. If it is left behind, in whatever classroom or lost-and-found box, the name still says whose it is. The devotee goes to Rama's city at the end; if born again anywhere, the name hari-bhakt goes too.
