Prayer for a Straight Path
Isha Upanishad 1.18
Meaning · English
Agni, guide us along a good road toward wealth. You, god, know every one of our deeds. Take from us the wrongdoing that makes us stumble and lead us astray. We will offer you our fullest words of praise.
The verse is a prayer, spoken to Agni, the fire. Three words carry it. Supatha means a good path: su is good, patha is road. Raya is wealth, here the wealth of a life well arrived. Enas is wrongdoing, the fault that makes a person veer. The speaker asks to be led by the good road, and gives the reason in the middle: Agni is vidvan, one who knows, and he knows all our actions, the hidden ones too. Nothing has to be explained to him or concealed from him. Then comes the request to be parted from the wrongdoing that makes us wander, and the promise in return: many words of praise, offered in full. The problem it answers is plain. A person can want the right road and still be pulled off it by their own past faults. So the Isha asks for guidance and cleansing together. What it asks of the listener is honesty before a witness who already knows, and a willingness to be steered. Shankara reads Agni here as the deity who leads the worshipper by the southern path of the sun's journey after death, to the fruit of right action, and he reads the wealth as that fruit of deeds, not money.
A hiker lost in fog at dusk sees a guide's lantern ahead. The guide knows every turn of the hillside, including the ditch the hiker fell into earlier. The lantern is Agni's knowing light, the ditch is the old fault, and the hiker's thanks is the praise promised at the end.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes before sleep and recall one thing you did today that pulled you off the road you wanted to walk. 2. Name it plainly to yourself, in one sentence, without excuse or punishment. 3. Ask, in your own words, to be led straight tomorrow. If you keep a lamp or a flame, light it first. 4. Say one sentence of thanks for something that went well today.
A man sits in his parked car outside his sister's house. Years ago he borrowed money from her and never repaid it, and he has avoided her since. He wants to go in. His hand stays on the key. The verse speaks to this moment. It begins with the wish for a good road, not with the failure. Next it says the whole record is already known, so there is nothing left to guard. He can stop rehearsing excuses and say the fact as it is: I owe you, and I stayed away. Then comes the request to be freed from the fault, which in his case means a plan to repay and a visit. Last, the promise of praise points to what follows, a thankfulness for a door that opens. Ordinary experience confirms that a hidden wrong gets heavier the longer it is carried. The verse does not promise that his sister will forgive him, that the debt will vanish, or that the old hurt will be undone. It gives a direction and an honest start.
