Only the Name Carries Across

Bhaja Govindam 33

Meaning · English

Worship Govinda, worship Govinda, worship Govinda, foolish mind. To cross over this world of becoming, we see no way other than remembering the Name.

The call to worship Govinda comes three times in a single breath. To worship means to turn toward him and stay close. Govinda is a name of Krishna, the cowherd. The foolish mind being scolded is anyone's own mind, busy with other things. Then comes the claim, said plainly: to cross over this life of becoming, the hymn sees no way other than remembering the Name. It offers nothing else and adds nothing to it.

Picture someone on a riverbank as the water rises, reciting everything they know about how boats are built: the timber, the joints, the tar. The ferry is tied up a few steps away. Knowing how boats work carries no one across. Getting in does. The Name, remembered, is the boat. The rules of grammar are the lecture on carpentry.
