A Grammarian's Mind Made Clean
Bhaja Govindam 32
मूढः कश्चन वैयाकरणो डुकृञ्करणाध्ययन धुरीणः । श्रीमच्छम्कर भगवच्छिष्यैः बोधित आसीच्छोधितकरणः
Meaning · English
A certain foolish grammarian, yoked to learning the rule for 'to do', was taught by the revered Shankara's disciples, and his mind and senses were made clean.
A short story rather than an instruction. A grammarian, named only as a fool, was yoked to his studies, working over one line from the grammar's list of verb roots: the entry for 'to do'. Shankara's disciples taught him, and the change came in him rather than in his learning. His mind and senses were cleaned. One word, meaning a tool or instrument, turns up twice: in the line he studied, and for his own inner faculties.
A man spends years reading about spectacles: how hinges are made, how lenses are ground, the name of every part. All that time the pair on his nose is smeared, and the world looks grey. A friend lifts them off and wipes them. The reading is the grammarian's study; the smeared lenses are his own mind and senses.
