The Lord Within Your Heart

Bhaja Govindam 31

गुरुचरणाम्बुज निर्भर भक्तः संसारादचिराद्भव मुक्तः । सेन्द्रियमानस नियमादेवं द्रक्ष्यसि निज हृदयस्थं देवम्

Meaning · English

Lean wholly on your teacher's lotus feet and be free of worldly life soon. Rein in senses and mind this way, and you will see the God within your heart.

It begins with trust in the teacher that holds nothing back. 'Wholly' is the word that carries it, not 'mostly'. From that trust comes freedom from the round of worldly life, and it comes soon, not at some distant end. Alongside it goes a steady hold on the senses and the mind. Where it all leads is not a God somewhere far off. It is the one already present in your own heart, seen at last.

Someone searches every drawer for their glasses, getting more irritated, while the glasses sit on top of their own head. A friend points, and the search ends in a second. The teacher is the one who points. The God looked for everywhere else was in the searcher's own heart the whole time.

अपने गुरु के चरण-कमलों पर पूरी तरह निर्भर रहो और शीघ्र ही संसार से मुक्त हो जाओ। इसी प्रकार इंद्रियों और मन को वश में करो, तो तुम अपने हृदय में बसे भगवान को देखोगे।

इसकी शुरुआत गुरु पर ऐसे भरोसे से होती है जो कुछ भी बचाकर नहीं रखता। सारा भार 'पूरी तरह' शब्द पर है, 'अधिकतर' पर नहीं। उसी भरोसे से संसार के चक्र से मुक्ति मिलती है, और वह शीघ्र मिलती है, किसी दूर के अंत में नहीं। इसके साथ-साथ इंद्रियों और मन पर स्थिर लगाम भी चलती है। यह सब जहाँ ले जाता है, वह कहीं दूर बैठा कोई भगवान नहीं है। वह वही है जो पहले से तुम्हारे अपने हृदय में बसा है, और अंततः दिख जाता है।

कोई अपना चश्मा ढूँढते हुए हर दराज छान मारता है और उसकी झुँझलाहट बढ़ती जाती है, जबकि चश्मा उसके अपने सिर पर ही टिका होता है। कोई मित्र इशारा करता है, और खोज पल भर में समाप्त हो जाती है। गुरु वही है जो इशारा करता है। जिस भगवान को बाकी हर जगह खोजा गया, वह पूरे समय खोजने वाले के अपने हृदय में ही था।
