प्राणायामं प्रत्याहारं नित्यानित्य विवेकविचारम् । जाप्यसमेत समाधिविधानं कुर्ववधानं महदवधानम्

Meaning · English

Steady the breath, draw the senses in, weigh what lasts against what passes, and practise absorption along with repeating a sacred name. Do it with care, great care.

Four disciplines are named. The first is steadying the breath into an even, measured rhythm. The second is drawing the senses back, so the eyes and ears stop pulling attention out into the world. The third is sorting what lasts from what passes, asking of each thing held whether it will stay. The fourth is deep absorption, carried by quiet repetition of a sacred name. Then comes the closing word, said twice: care, great care. That doubled word is where the weight falls.

Someone carrying a cup filled to the brim across a crowded room walks the same steps as anyone else. The difference is in the eyes, fixed on the rim, and the hands, set for each small tilt. The four practices are the walking. The doubled word at the end is the eyes on the rim.

साँस को स्थिर करो, इंद्रियों को भीतर समेटो, जो टिकता है उसे जो बीत जाता है उससे तौलो, और किसी पवित्र नाम के जप के साथ गहरे ध्यान में लीन होने का अभ्यास करो। यह सावधानी से करो, बड़ी सावधानी से।

चार साधनाएँ बताई गई हैं। पहली है साँस को स्थिर करके उसे एक सम, नपी-तुली लय में लाना। दूसरी है इंद्रियों को वापस खींचना, ताकि आँखें और कान ध्यान को बाहर संसार की ओर खींचना छोड़ दें। तीसरी है जो टिकता है उसे जो बीत जाता है उससे अलग करना, हर थामी हुई चीज़ से यह पूछते हुए कि क्या वह रहेगी। चौथी है गहरी लीनता, जो किसी पवित्र नाम के शांत जप के सहारे चलती है। फिर आता है अंतिम शब्द, दो बार कहा गया: सावधानी, बड़ी सावधानी। पूरा भार उसी दोहराए गए शब्द पर पड़ता है।

किनारे तक भरा प्याला लेकर भीड़ भरे कमरे को पार करने वाला व्यक्ति वही कदम चलता है जो कोई और चलता है। अंतर उसकी आँखों में है, जो प्याले के किनारे पर टिकी हैं, और उसके हाथों में, जो हर छोटे झुकाव के लिए सधे हुए हैं। चारों साधनाएँ उसका चलना हैं। अंत में दोहराया गया शब्द किनारे पर टिकी उसकी आँखें हैं।
