Wealth That Breeds Fear

Bhaja Govindam 29

Meaning · English

Always see wealth as harm. In truth not a trace of happiness comes from it. The rich fear even their own sons; this is the way everywhere.

Wealth is to be seen, again and again, for what it brings, and what it brings is harm. The word for wealth and the word for harm differ only by a short prefix meaning 'not', and Shankara leans on that. Not even a sliver of real happiness comes out of it. His proof is ordinary: people with money grow afraid, even of their own sons, who stand to inherit it. And this is how it goes everywhere, not only in some unlucky house.

Picture someone at a crowded station guarding a heavy suitcase. They cannot doze, and every stranger who drifts near looks like a thief. The bag was packed for comfort on the journey; now it has taken the journey from them. Wealth works the same way: what is held ends up holding its owner.
