Knowing, Yet Not Letting Go
Bhaja Govindam 28
Meaning · English
A man gives himself to pleasure with women; afterward, sadly, the body falls ill. Though death is the last shelter, he still will not let go of doing wrong.
Two facts sit side by side. Pleasure chased for its own sake comes back later as illness in the same body that enjoyed it, and the poet sighs as he says so. Everyone also knows how life ends: death is called a shelter here, the one place every life finally comes to rest. That knowledge ought to change something. It does not. Seeing the ending plainly, a person still will not let go of doing wrong.
A man turns a cigarette packet over in his fingers. The warning covers half of it, in large letters, with a photograph of a diseased lung. He reads it, taps one out, and lights it. Knowing we will die is that label: read in full, understood, and still not enough to open the hand that holds on.
