Bhaja Govindam 27

Meaning · English

The Gita and the thousand names are for singing; the form of Lakshmi's lord, for holding in thought always; the mind, for good company; wealth, for people in need.

Four things, and a use for each. The Bhagavad Gita and the hymn of Vishnu's thousand names are for singing, out loud, not for parsing. Vishnu, called Lakshmi's lord, is the form the mind rests on, without a gap. The mind itself is taken where good people gather. Money goes to those who have little.

Pull every weed from a patch of garden and leave it bare, and within weeks it is green with weeds again. A gardener plants it instead, so the ground is already taken. Voice, mind, spare hours and money are like that: left empty, they drift back to old habits, and these four acts give each one something to grow.
