Setting Down the Four
Bhaja Govindam 26
Meaning · English
Let go of desire, anger, greed and delusion, and dwell on the self, asking: who am I? Fools without self-knowledge are cooked, hidden deep in hell.
Four things are named for letting go: desire, anger, greed and delusion. They are the pull toward things, the flare against them, the hunger for more, and the fog that keeps all three from being seen. Dropping them clears the ground. The real work comes next: a question to sit with, not answer once and file away. Who am I? People who never find out are called fools, and the fate given them is blunt. They are cooked, shut away in hell.
Stir a glass of pond water and you see only brown. Stop stirring, set it on the sill, and the silt sinks until you can see through to the bottom. The four named here are the stirring. Setting them down lets the water clear, and only then can anyone see what is at the bottom.
