Neither Feud Nor Truce

Bhaja Govindam 25

Meaning · English

With enemy or friend, son or kinsman, spend no effort on war or truce. See the Self in all, and drop everywhere the ignorance that divides.

Four people are named: the one who wrongs us, the one who likes us, our own child, our kin. With each, no effort goes into picking a fight or into making peace. Peacemaking is on the list too, because a truce still assumes two sides facing each other. The reason comes next: the same Self is in every one of them. The real trouble is a kind of not-knowing, the habit of seeing others as apart from us, and the call is to drop it everywhere.

Your left hand never goes to war with your right, and never signs a peace with it either. When a thorn goes into one, the other simply pulls it out, no grudge, no bargain. Both belong to one body. Seeing the same Self in enemy and friend works like that: nothing left to fight, nothing to negotiate.
