One Vishnu in Us All

Bhaja Govindam 24

Meaning · English

One Vishnu is in you, in me, and everywhere else. Your anger at me, your impatience, is wasted. Be even-minded everywhere, if you want to become Vishnu soon.

The voice is the one being snapped at: you are angry with me, and for nothing. The reason is the first line. One Vishnu is in you, in me, in everything else, so the anger lands on the same Vishnu in both of you. The word for the angry one means someone who cannot bear another. What is offered instead is an even mind, the same toward everyone, everywhere. Whoever wants to reach Vishnu soon starts with the person across the room.

Bite your tongue at dinner and it hurts, sharply. Nobody turns on their own teeth, or holds a grudge against them for a week. Teeth and tongue belong to one body, and punishing either one only hurts the same person twice. Anger at another person, when one Vishnu is in both, is that same grudge against your own teeth.
