कस्त्वं कोऽहं कुत आयातः का मे जननी को मे तातः । इति परिभावय सर्वमसारम् विश्वं त्यक्त्वा स्वप्न विचारम्

Meaning · English

Who are you, who am I, where did I come from? Who is my mother, my father? Weigh it all as hollow; let the world go like a dream.

Shankara asks plain questions. Who are you? Who am I? Where did I come from? Who are my mother and father? We answer them every day with a name and a family, but the answers never reach where any of us came from. Think them through and every such tie turns out to have no core that lasts. So the world is let go the way a dream is on waking: its people and places were vivid, and none of them was solid.

Strangers share a train compartment for two days. By the second morning they pass each other food, call each other auntie and brother, mind each other's bags. Then the stations come and each one steps off. Nothing held them together but the journey. Mother, father, you and I are names given on a ride like that.

तुम कौन हो, मैं कौन हूँ, मैं कहाँ से आया? कौन मेरी माँ है, कौन मेरा पिता? इन सबको खोखला जानकर परखो; संसार को सपने की तरह छोड़ दो।

शंकर सीधे प्रश्न पूछते हैं। तुम कौन हो? मैं कौन हूँ? मैं कहाँ से आया? मेरे माता-पिता कौन हैं? हम रोज़ इनका उत्तर एक नाम और एक परिवार से दे देते हैं, पर ये उत्तर कभी वहाँ तक नहीं पहुँचते जहाँ से हममें से कोई आया। इन्हें अंत तक सोचो तो ऐसा हर नाता ऐसा निकलता है जिसके भीतर टिकने वाला कोई सार नहीं। इसलिए संसार को वैसे ही छोड़ दिया जाता है जैसे जागने पर सपना छूट जाता है: उसके लोग और स्थान सजीव थे, पर उनमें से कोई भी ठोस नहीं था।

कुछ अजनबी दो दिन तक रेल के एक ही डिब्बे में साथ यात्रा करते हैं। दूसरी सुबह तक वे एक-दूसरे को खाना बढ़ाने लगते हैं, एक-दूसरे को चाची और भैया कहने लगते हैं, एक-दूसरे के सामान का ध्यान रखने लगते हैं। फिर स्टेशन आते हैं और हर कोई उतर जाता है। यात्रा के सिवा उन्हें किसी चीज़ ने नहीं बाँधा था। माँ, पिता, तुम और मैं, ये सब ऐसी ही एक यात्रा में दिए गए नाम हैं।
